Mr. Babu N born in Badiadka, brought up in Nellikunje Kasaragod. He belongs to Padungod-theeya (Kotian). He moved to Bangalore in the 50s as he was an automobile (lorry) mechanic, he was a foreman in Model Garage and he was with CPC Transport, Bangalore. He was 75 years old. He was a memeber of Bhagavathi Billava(Belchada) Sangha, Bangalore.

Mr. Babu N married to K Susheela, from Kasaragod.

He has one son mr. Vinod Kumar and one daughter , both are married and settled in Bangalore.

Mr. Vinod Kumar is working in Macmet India (www.macmet.net) as Jr. Manager - Admin. Also he is a member of Bhagavathi Billava (Belchada) Sangha.

Thiya's Utsav - 2009

Thiya Samaj, Mumbai, founded in 1944 has been rendering yeoman services in social, culturaland educational fields for over six decades. It is giving educational aids and awards scholarships to the needy and deserving students of weaker sections of our community.

To bring our community members closer we have been conducting series of programs and many more are in the pipeline. This year we have decided to conduct Thiya.s Utsav-2009 in Mumbai commencing from 28th February 2009 and concluding on 21st March 2009. This program is being conducted in association with Thiya Samaj, Dubai, U.A.E., Kudroli Sri Bhagavathi Kshetra, Sri Bhagavathi Co-operative Bank Ltd., Mangalore and with help from all Thiya Associations.

During this period we will have series of cultural programs commencing with inaugural session with Yakshagana Bayalata .SHRI BHAGAWATHI MAHATME.. This drama would help us to educate all our members and the general public about origin of Thiya Community and its rich culture. This would also help our children in understanding our culture better.

The program would conclude with grand .SRI SRINIVASA KALYANA MAHOTSAVA. for world peace and prosperity in the presence of Sri K. V. Ramanachari, I.A.S., Executive Officer, Sri Tirumala Tirupathi Devastanam. Kalyana Mahotsava will be conducted by Sri S. Venkatesh Murthy, Co-ordinator, South Zone, Dasa Sahitya Project, Bangalore and his team. We will also have various programs at Dubai on 13th March 2009 and at Mangalore on 14th March 2009. Other details of the program will be published separately.

The program would highlight about our 18 Thiya Temples situated between Kasaragod and Sashihitlu. This would also bring to light activities of about 1000 Tharawads of our community. It is known that many of our Tharawads are flourishing and many are still dormant. Many of these Tharawads are operating without a proper priest. On this occasion we have decided to gather more information of all our Tharawads and its activities. We therefore request all our members to give details of their Tharawad which will help us to contact them and get more details and approach appropriate Government body for remuneration for the priests and other developmental activities. This program would also give emphasis on these Tharawads and help the dormant one to rise up and work for the benefit of our community.

It has also been decided to felicitate prominent members of our community and other dignitaries from various fields. We request all our members to take active part in the entire program and be recipient of blessings of Lord Sri Venkateshwara and Padmavathi Devi.

The entire program is expected to cost us approximately Rs. 51,00,000/- (Rupees fifty one lacs). We therefore request all our philanthropic minded members to contribute generously and sponsor various items required for this purpose. Major heads of expenses are:

Bride & Grooms Meet - Thiya Samaj, Mumbai.

Thiya Samaj, Mumbai has arranged a “Bride & Groom” meet for the benefit our Thiya community on Sunday the 24^th August 2008. More than 30 boys and girls participated in the event along with their parents. Parents have appreciated the efforts taken by the managing committee of Thiya Samaj in gathering large number of boys and girls of marriageable age. They felt that this would definitely help them to choose their choice of pairs. Many of prominent Thiya members were present to grace the occasion. Function started with lighting of lamps by Shri M. S. N. Vaidya, Shri K. P. Arvind, Shri Vishwanath U. K., Shri Umesh B Manjeshwar, Shri Sudhakar Uchil and Smt. Seeta Salian.

63rd Annual Report Dear Members, The President, Members of Board of Trustees and the Members of the Managing Committee of Thiya Sama, Mumbai, take pleasure in submitting the 63rd Annual Report of our Samaj for the financial year 2007-08. 63rd Annual General Body Meeting The 63rd Annual General Body Meeting of our Samaj was held on Sunday the 7^th October 2007 at Matunga, Mumbai at 10.00 a.m. Meeting starter with a prayer. The Hon. Gen. Secretary, Shri Chandrashekar B. welcomed all members. He made announcement of sad demise of Shri Abhishek Suvarna (S/o. Shri Ravi S. Manjeshwar). Two minutes silent prayer was held to pray the Almighty to bestow eternal peace to the departed soul and to give strength to the bereaved family to bear the irreparable loss. The Annual Report of the previous year was submitted by the Hon. Gen. Secretary. He informed the members about the printing errors inadvertently occurred in the report. The report was unanimously approved by proposal from Dr. M. Ratnakar and Seconded by Shri Kamalaksha Bolar. The General Body also unanimously approved (by proposal from Dr. M. Ratnakar and Seconded by Smt. Chandra M. Suvarna) the Income and Expenditure Statement and the Balance Sheet presented by the Hon. Treasurer after getting necessary clarifications on the points raised by the members. Points raised were in connection with the expenditure of Rs.40,000/- in for getting OBC Certification, expenses more than income and writing off of bad debt of Rs.35,370.50. Election of Chairperson for Ladies Wing The Vice-Chairperson of Ladies Wing Smt. Sapna G. Uchil appreciated the services rendered by Smt. Seeta K Salian in the capacity of Chairperson during the last tenure and proposed to re-elect Smt. Seeta Salian as Chairperson for the next tenure. Smt. Chandra M. Suvarna seconded this proposal. Smt. Seeta Salian accepted the honour and agreed to continue for as Chairperson of Ladies Wing for the year 2007-09. Election of Chairman for Youth Wing Shri Vicky Bolar proposed the name of Shri Roopesh Rao to lead the Youth Wing for the next two years and Shri Vasudev Palan seconded this proposal. Shri Roopesh Rao was unanimously elected as the Chairman of Youth Wing for the year 2007-09.

Appointment of Auditors

M/s. Rao and Ashok, Chartered Accountants have been appointed as the statutory auditor and Shri Narayan Suvarna has been appointed as internal auditor for the financial year 2007-08.

Approval of budget for 2007-08

The Hon. Treasurer informed General Body that no major income or expenditure is planned for the coming financial year and requested them to authorize the Managing Committee to prepare necessary budget for the year 2007-08. This request was accepted unanimously. Bye-laws for the Sub-committees The draft bye-laws prepared by the Constitution Sub-committee to regulate the functioning of various sub-committees of Thiya Samaj, was submitted before the General Body by Shri Vishwanath U.K. During the discussion Dr. M. Ratnakar has suggested some minor modifications on the draft. Shri Vishwanath U.K. informed the members that these suggestions would be discussed in the Constitution Sub-committee and if approved the same would be incorporated in the draft, or else the draft would be finalized as it is. The General Body has unanimously decided to approve the bye-laws accordingly.

Speech by the Audience

Following members have spoke on this occasion and gave timely suggestions regarding various activities of the Samaj, own building for the Samaj, education facilities for the children and educational aids for the children of our Samaj – Motilal Bangera, Gopal R. Bangera, Gopal T. Belchada, Yadav Rao, Gopal Salian, M.S.N. Vaidya, Govind Manjeshwar, Roopesh Rao and Smt. Seeta K. Salian Shri Pushkal Kumar Tonse who was present on this occasion was honoured with flowers. He thanked the community members for the honour and appreciated the activities undertaken by the Samaj in Mumbai. He sang a song and praised Shree Bhagawathi which was cherished by all members present.

Presidential Speech

In the Presidential address Shri K. P. Arvind opined that girl children of our Samaj are coming forward with higher education compared to the male children. He felt that this imbalance is felt during the time of alliance for our children. He therefore appealed all to ensure that male children are given more opportunities to go in for higher studies. This would also help our Samaj to come forward. At the end of the meeting Hon. Gen. Secretary, Shri Chandrashekar B. thanked the audience, President, Managing committee members and the members who spoke on the occasion and encouraged the members to work for the Samaj. He also thanked M/s. Rao and Ashok, Chartered Accountants for auditing our accounts and their valuable guidance in proper keeping of the accounts, M/s. Aarati Art Printers for printing the annual report in time and the donors who have generously contributed to the education funds. 63^rd Annual Day Celebration The 63^rd Annual Day Celebration was held on the same day at 2.30 p.m. at the same venue. Number of children of our community took part in the variety entertainment program. This program was organized by the Youth Wing and Ladies Wing of our Samaj. In between a stage program was also held as 3.30 p.m. Shri K. P. Arvind presided the function. Guests on this occasion were Shri M.S.N. Vaidya, Shri Kumar Bangera, Shri Pravinshankar B. M. and Smt. Bhavani Sundar. The program was commenced with lighting of Lamp by the guests and prayer by the members of Ladies Wing.

Distribution of Meritorious Awards and Scholarship

The Hon. Gen. Secretary furnished the details of the scholarship and meritorious awards awarded during the financial year 2006-07. The details are:

The following students were given meritorious awards for their excellent performance in HSC and SSC examinations conducted during the year 2006-2007. These awards were presented by the guests: Master Rohit RaoMaster Samvardam P. Suvarna Master Guruprasad BangeraKumari Akshita S. SuvarnaKumari Yamini G. Kotian On this occasion Shri Pravinshankar B.M. spoke about the educational aid from the Samaj. He felt that our Samaj is having a very small fund as Educational Fund and requested all members to contribute generously so that we will have a sizeable amount to help needy and deserving students of our Samaj. He also requested the members to identify the needy students and help them to pursue higher studies. He further announced an amount of Rs.10,000/- per year from next academic year for a poor student who pursues professional education. The mementoes and certificates for these students were sponsored by Shri Sridhar Suvarna, Secretary, Youth Wing.

During the financial year the Managing Committee met 12 times to transact the business of our Samaj smoothly. The sub-committees have also met every month and have contributed for the growth of our Samaj.

Ladies Wing

Thy Ladies Wing of our Samaj is actively working for the benefit of our members for the past three years. “Vishu Kani” the new year of our community is being organized by them for the past few years. This year this function was held on 14^th April 2008 at Shree Siddivinayak Temple, Jogeshwari. About 150 members of our community participated in the function. A function – “Haldi Kum Kum” was organized by them on 25.01.2008 at Ashmita Bhavan School, Jogeshwari. This program was filled with variety entertainments, sports, etc. and was followed by dinner.

Western Regional Committee

Distribution of note books was made on 01.07.2008 by the Western Regional Committee for the deserving 79 students of our community. Annual Shree Satyanarayana Pooja was held on 30.12.2007 at Shree Siddivinayak Temple, Jogeshwari. Members in great numbers attended this function and took Prasad and blessings from Shree Satyanarayana.

Youth Wing

Youth Wing of our Samaj is very active and conducted variety entertainment on the occasion of 63^rd Annual day of the Samaj. They have also released the first ever calendar of our Samaj for the year 2008. A picnic for our members was also organized by them to enjoy the natural beauty of Yevoor Jungle.

Thiya Jyoti the flagship newsletter of our Samaj is being released every month by the editorial board headed by Shri Umesh B. Manjeshwar. Meritorious Awards and Scholarship

Mr.Nagesh Suvarna (Treasurer) presided over the meeting and briefed the delegates on the activities Dubai Thiya Samaj are currently indulged and their focus and vision for the coming years. Thiya samaj malayalee billawa (dubai) had their 4th annual devi pooja performed on 9th/november/07 at sindhi hall – bur dubai which only co-incided to the auspicious deepawali and laxmi pooja day.

The devi pooja was well attended by all members of the community and it gave a very composed feeling
To see all age group participating extensively in the days function.the day commenced with chanting of mantras and bhajans while the hall/stage was being lit up and decorated with flowers and fruits.

Mr/mrs. Yathin & sandya was the host for the pooja. The pooja concluded with “maha prasadam” being served to all devotees and invitees..

Thiya samaj dubai extend their special thanks to their learned poojari S.L.Rao who had the proceedings conducted well in line to our sashtras and puranas which was being excerised and graced by our great ancestors of past.

Thiya Samaj Dubai extend a word of appreciation to the Bajan Mandal (billava mitra vrinda) who had vast collections of melodious devotional songs and rhymes which transformed the day to more lively and to a memorable one.

Thiya Samaj Dubai also thank all the sponsors for their generous contributions that has helped to a great deal in bringing success to the days function.

It has been mutually agreed by all the committee members that the fund accumulated after taking away all the expenses will be dedicated to a noble cause like “vidyadana”, details of which will be up-dated at regular intervals through this site.

In the Parashurama Shrusti the members of the community known differently as THIYA-BELCHADA- MALAYALI BILLAWA were the inhabitants from time immemorial concentrated between north of Chandragiri river ( Kasaragod ) and south of Kalyanpura river ( Hejamamdi ) and West to East between the shores of the Arabian sea to Sulya region. This Belchada / Thiya community though extremely backward in the financial and educational sphere, has a rich heritage and has its own unique Customs, Rituals and Aradhana.

There exist 18 important Bhagavathi Kshetras apart from many Tharavad / Family shrines spread over Kasaragod, Mangalore and Udupi districts. Though the ruling deity of community is BHAGAVATHI ,there are temples dedicated to VISHNUMOORTHY , WAYANAD DAIVA AND KORATHI-the later to are believed to be incarnation of Lord Shiva and Shakthi respectively. Chaitanyas like KALLURTI , PANJURLI ,GULIGA, NAGADEVA are being devotionally worshipped by this community and regular KOLA ,THAMBLIA, KALIYATA etc. are performed to invoke their blessings .

THIYA BELCHADA community is divided into 8 ILLAMS which traces it’s origin to one Amruthamani born out of the Lord Shiva’s grace and seven others born to to the Sapthamathas through the same Lord’s divine blessings, which means Thiyas are the progeny of Lord Shiva. Marriage between the same ILLAMS is considered a taboo being Sagothra. This community is coming under the spell the 19th century Great Saint and reformer Sri.NarayanaGuru’s teachings.

Owing to mobility in search of livelihood, the community members are spread out and a good chunk of them are concentrated in cities like Mumbai and Bangalore. Beyond the above noted original habitat Thiya Samaj was formed in Mumbai. More than 50 years back, in particular and many KSHETRA SAMITIS in general, have been functioning extremely well striving their best to organize and serve the community.
